Dr.Rita Dhamankar is a practising ophthalmologist in a small town of Alibag for the last 26 years. She was born & brought up in Mumbai. Her medical graduation & Post graduation was done from the prestigious Grant Medical College , Mumbai.

She has won many awards both during her graduation & post graduation. She topped the Diploma in Ophthalmic Medicine & Surgery, winning Dr. Dastoor's Gold Medal & also topped the Master's in Mumbai University.

After a quiet practice in the small coastal town of Alibag for 5 years, She set out to update herself & traveled to USA on a Rotary Scholarship in 1986. All along she continued working as a consulting ophthalmologist to IPCL, Township medical Unit, Nagothane & RCF Hospital, Alibag together with her own practice. Thereafter she was back home, only to get back into active academics once again in the late 90's.

She trained with Dr. G.Chandrashekhar at the L.V.Prasad.Eye Institute in Hyderabad, & Dr. Ravi Thomas , at the Christian Medical College , Vellore & accepted the challenge of heading the Glaucoma department of the Laxmi Eye Institute, Panvel. Soon she set herself new targets, & actively participated in all the Academic meets in the country.
She has been presenting papers & Posters at all the Ophthalmic meets, & has won awards for the same, both at the State & National levels.

In 2004, went to The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami to do a fellowship in Glaucoma with Dr. Paul Palmberg, an Internationally renowned Glaucoma consultant. She has been invited as Faculty to talk on Glaucoma all over the country. She was also invited to the Sri Lanka annual meet in 2004, to talk on Glaucoma.

She has also attended the American Academy of Ophthalmology in New Orleans , USA in Oct 2004 , the World Glaucoma Congress in Vienna in August 2005. She has presented 3 posters at the South East Asia Glaucoma Interest Group meeting in Dec 2006.

She has been actively involved in various drug trials on Glaucoma, both for national & multinational companies. She is one of the first ophthalmologist's in India to start using the Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, the results of which have been presented at the SEAGIG meet in 2006.

A person with very good organizational skills & a friendly nature, organizing meetings comes to her naturally. She has been the organizing secretary for Icon06 an international conference on Cataract & Glaucoma, held at D.Y.Patil Medical College, Nerul in Nov 06. which was very well appreciated by the ophthalmic community.

She has also organised "Alibag 2006, " an interesting two day feast in Ophthalmology in April 2006, at Alibag. She actively helped in organizing the annual conference of the Raigad Medical Association "Sauvaad " held in Alibag in 2001- 2002. Compered the entire Raigad Medical Association annual meet "Medipen" in 2000-2001. Apart from medicine, she has actively participated in organizing a motor sport rally the "MASA", part of the national Car Rally, held in Raigad District in 1996.

Heading the Laxmi College of Optometry, is on the paper setting board of the Yeshwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, Nasik. A multifaceted personality, she is a trustee for Pratham , a N.G.O. working with the economically & scholastically backward children in Alibag taluka. She has conducted summer camps for children in Alibag in the vacations for personality development. Also started Conversational English classes in Alibag.

She is happily married to Rajiv, a pediatrician for the last 29 years & has a genetic counselor in her son Rupin, who is now in the USA. Travelling is a hobby she pursues more than regularly & has visited offbeat destinations like Uzbekistan too, for it's cultural diversity & historical uniqueness.
